SBE Prophylaxis ( Antibiotic treatment before dental appointments for person with heart murmurs)

There are new guidelines regarding the need to provide antibiotic prophylaxis for heart conditions before dental treatment.  As of March 2007, the American Heart Association has issued new protocol.  The only conditions that require prophylaxis now include:

1. Prosthetic valves
2. Prior episode of infective endocarditis
3. Very rare congenital heart diseases
4. Cardiac transplant patients with valvulitis

Listed below are some of the procedures which Dr. Bell provides.

Gum Disease Treatment: Treatment will depend on the type of periodontal disease and how far the condition has progressed. Treatment options include:
  • Scaling- cleans the teeth to remove deposits above and below the gumline.
  • Root planing- smoothes rough root surfaces so the gum can heal
  • Oral irrigation- directs liquid below the gumline to flush out and kill germs and allow the regrowth of healthy tissue.
Tooth Colored Fillings: are used to repair areas of decay or to replace current fillings. They are created to match the natural color of the tooth.

Root Canals: removes the infection from the tooth so it can remain in the mouth without being the site of infection. It fills the space where the nerve and blood vessel use to be. Is Treatment for an abscessed tooth.

Extractions: Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone.

Crowns and Bridges: Crowns or caps are placed on teeth that are weakened by a large filling when not much of the natural tooth is left. Crowns protect the teeth by making them stronger. Bridges- is a way of replacing one to two missing teeth to give a natural look.

Implants: Are replacements for missing roots which can hold crowns, bridges,or dentures in the mouth. An implant is placed in the jawbone, which helps preserve the jawbone that tends to shrink after natural teeth are lost.
